In a recent post I set out some of the background as to how we got here (It’s here if anyone is interested)
Now the Government is consulting on proposed 20mph speed zones in Ramsey and the North and I thought it would be helpful to share some information and some thoughts.
All the information you need about the consultation and how to respond is helpfully placed at https://20mph.gov.im/northern/ – there are also some maps up in the atrium of Ramsey Town Hall if you want a close up look.

Consultation period: 7 July 2025 until 1 September 2025
I’ll be just e-mailing the Department of Infrastructure with my views, the online mapping system is fine if you have views on specific roads but I just wanted to provide a more general comment.
The map of Ramsey shows that by and large the proposed 20mph zones are in areas that are heavily residential – I’ve reproduced the maps (split north and south) to help with a visual comparison.
Overwhelmingly the changes are proposed in residential areas, but there are a few suggested changes that I’m seeking feedback on
- Bowring Road – should this be 30mph as it is a main arterial route to the North? If so, should we make changes to the junction at Jurby Rd to help slow down traffic around this bend?
- Queens Pier Road – as the main arterial route, should this be 30mph from Parliament Square, up May Hill and then out to the Mountain?
- Waterloo Road – currently the 30mph kicks back in after Queens Valley, is this the right place? Or should this remain at 30mph all the way through from Albert Road?
As you can see, these changes relate to the main arterial roads through Ramsey (I’ve left out commenting on Lezayre Road as this goes right past the schools)
Whatever your views I would encourage you to share them via the consultation
